Professional car interior detailing in Geelong goes well beyond a vacuum and a wipe. A proper job covers a deep clean of every surface, steam to lift grime from vents and seams, sanitising of the things you touch most, care for leather and trim, treatment of stains, and removal of the source of any odours.

At Preema, interior packages start with Interior Emerald from $195, which takes about two hours, and Interior Diamond from $245, which takes three to four hours. Both are done at your home or workplace. You can see the details on our Geelong interior detailing page, and below we walk through each part of the job.

A deep clean that starts with the vacuum

Vacuuming sounds simple, but the difference between a quick vacuum and a detailing vacuum is time and access. Seats are moved forward and back so rails and the floor beneath them can be reached. Crevice tools and brushes work dirt out of seat seams, stitching and the gap between the seat and the console.

The boot gets the same treatment, including the spare wheel well if it has collected sand or spills. Floor mats come out, are cleaned separately, and go back in once the carpet beneath is done.

Air vents, the gaps around the gear selector and the tracks of sunroofs and sliding doors trap a surprising amount of dust. Soft detailing brushes work it loose so the vacuum can take it away, rather than leaving it to blow back out the first time the fan runs. Hard surfaces are then wiped down with products suited to each material.

Steam cleaning and sanitising

Steam is one of the most useful tools in interior work. Hot vapour loosens sticky residue, grease and grime from textured plastics, air vents, cup holders and door handles without soaking the surface or needing harsh chemicals.

It is also a practical way to sanitise high-touch areas. Steering wheels, gear selectors, indicator stalks, window switches and seat belt buckles collect skin oils and grime every day. Steaming and wiping them leaves them clean and less grubby to touch, which matters in a car shared by a family or a team at work.

Seat belts are easy to overlook. They collect sweat, sunscreen and food residue over years of use, and a clean belt webbing is one of those details you notice every time you buckle up. Door seals, the inside of door handles and the area around the boot latch also get attention, since they are touched constantly but rarely cleaned.

Leather and trim care

Leather needs a gentle cleaner that lifts dirt from the grain, followed by a conditioner that keeps it supple. Light-coloured leather shows dye transfer and grime quickly, so it benefits from regular attention. Strong all-purpose sprays can dry leather out and lead to cracking, especially on seat bolsters that see a lot of wear.

Plastics and vinyl are cleaned and finished without a greasy shine. Glossy dressings attract dust, cause glare on the windscreen and can make steering wheels slippery. A clean, matte finish looks closer to factory and is safer to drive with.

Fabric seats need a different approach again. They are cleaned with a suitable upholstery product, agitated gently with a brush and then extracted so the dirt is removed rather than pushed deeper into the foam. Alcantara and suede-style trims are handled with extra care, as they mark easily if scrubbed.

Stains: what comes out and what might not

Most everyday stains respond well to professional treatment. Coffee, soft drink, food, mud and general grime on fabric seats and carpet usually lift with the right product and extraction.

Some marks are harder. Ink, dye transfer from denim, and stains that have been heat-set by the sun can often be lightened but not always removed completely. A good detailer will tell you honestly what to expect before they start, so you are not left disappointed.

Timing makes a big difference. A fresh spill is far easier to remove than one that has sat through a few weeks of summer heat. If something gets spilled, blot it with a clean cloth and some water rather than scrubbing, then book a clean if it does not come out.

Getting rid of odours

Air fresheners only cover a smell. Lasting results come from finding and removing the source. Common culprits include:

  • Food and drink spills that have soaked into seat foam or carpet
  • Pet hair and dander packed into fabric
  • Damp carpet from wet shoes and umbrellas over a Geelong winter
  • Sports gear and wetsuits left in the boot after the beach
  • Cigarette smoke residue on the headlining and soft surfaces

Once the source is cleaned, the cabin needs to dry properly. Cabin air filters can also hold onto smells, so if a musty odour appears every time the fan comes on, it is worth checking when the filter was last replaced at your next service. If a smell has been there a long time, it may take more than one visit to fully clear, and we will be upfront about that.

Car interior detailing Geelong: Emerald or Diamond

Both interior packages cover vacuuming, steam cleaning, leather care and stain treatment. The difference is time, and time decides how far the clean can go.

  • Interior Emerald, from $195, about two hours: suits a cabin that is used daily but kept reasonably tidy, with light stains and normal wear
  • Interior Diamond, from $245, three to four hours: suits a cabin with kids, pets, heavy stains, sand or a smell that needs tracking down

Prices are "from" and depend on the size and condition of the car. We confirm the final figure before starting. If the outside needs work too, our guide to interior and exterior car detailing explains the combined packages.

Adding an interior ceramic coating

For longer-term protection, an interior ceramic coating is worth considering. Our Gtechniq interior coating, from $495, protects leather, vinyl, plastics and fabric, making spills easier to wipe up before they soak in. It is a good fit for light-coloured leather, for family cars and for anyone who carries a dog regularly. A coating is applied to a freshly cleaned interior, so it pairs naturally with a full interior detail. You can read more on our ceramic coating page.

Keeping your cabin clean between visits

A few habits stretch the life of a professional interior clean:

  • Keep a small bag in the car for rubbish and empty it every time you refuel
  • Use rubber floor mats in winter and shake them out weekly
  • Wipe spills straight away with a damp microfibre cloth rather than rubbing them in
  • Shake sand off towels and feet before getting in after the beach
  • Leave windows down a crack on dry days if the carpet has got wet
  • Use a seat cover for dogs and a protector mat under child seats

How often you book depends on how the car is used. Our article on car detailing in Geelong suggests a realistic schedule, and our post on mobile car detailing explains how a visit at your place works.
