A ceramic coating Brisbane drivers can rely on has to cope with fierce UV, heavy humidity and storms that coat a car in grime within minutes. A quality coating bonds to your clear coat and forms a hard, slick layer that sheds water and dirt, slows fading and makes washing much easier. For a car you plan to keep for a few years, it is usually worth it.
Preema applies Gtechniq coatings, a professional-only brand from the UK, with 5 year protection. Packages start at $495 for the interior, $1,095 for the exterior and $1,295 for both. You can read what each one covers on our Brisbane ceramic coating page, and the sections below explain how it works and how to look after it.
How a ceramic coating works
A ceramic coating starts as a liquid that is applied by hand, panel by panel. As it cures, it bonds with the clear coat and hardens into a very thin, glass-like layer that becomes part of the surface rather than sitting loosely on top like a wax.
That layer is strongly hydrophobic, so water beads and rolls off and takes loose dirt with it. Contaminants find it harder to grip, which means less scrubbing when you wash. It also adds depth and gloss, because the paint underneath has been cleaned and polished before the coating goes on.
The exterior packages protect more than the paint. Clear Vision Smart Glass on the windows and mirrors helps rain bead and clear during a downpour, which is useful when a storm rolls in on the drive home. Wheel Armour on the rims makes brake dust far easier to rinse away, so the wheels stay cleaner between washes.
What Queensland weather does to unprotected paint
Paint here works hard. Clear coat is the layer that keeps colour looking rich, and the local climate attacks it from several directions.
UV and heat
Years of strong sun break down clear coat, especially on horizontal panels such as the roof, bonnet and boot lid. Paint gradually loses gloss and can start to look chalky. A coating adds a sacrificial layer with UV resistance, which slows that process.
Humidity and water spots
Morning dew and humid air leave moisture sitting on the paint. As it evaporates in the heat, minerals are left behind as spots, and over time those can etch into an unprotected finish. Coated paint sheds water more cleanly, so fewer droplets dry in place.
Summer storms
Storm rain carries dust and pollution, then the sun comes back out and bakes it on. Wind brings leaves, twigs and sap with it. A slick coated surface releases this grime with a gentle wash instead of a hard scrub.
Droppings, bats and sap
Bird and bat droppings are acidic and can mark clear coat surprisingly fast on a hot day. Tree sap sets hard. A coating buys you time to remove them before they damage the paint, although it is still best to clean them off promptly.
Is ceramic coating worth it in Brisbane?
It depends on how long you keep your cars and how much time you want to spend cleaning them. Here is how the common options compare:
- Wax: easy to apply and gives a warm shine, but breaks down quickly in heat and needs regular reapplication
- Paint sealant: synthetic and longer lasting than wax, but still a top layer that wears away within months
- Ceramic coating: bonds to the paint, lasts for years with proper care, and makes every wash quicker
- Paint protection film: a clear physical film that absorbs stone chips, which is a separate product Preema does not install
A coating tends to suit you if you:
- Have a new car, or a second-hand car you plan to keep for several years
- Park outside or in an open carport
- Want washing to be faster and easier
- Care about how the paint looks in strong sunlight
If you are selling soon, a coating is rarely the best spend. A pre-sale detail gives buyers a fresh car to look at for far less.

Why preparation matters more than the bottle
A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. If swirls, water spots or fine scratches are left in the paint, the coating seals them in and makes them more obvious under its gloss. That is why preparation takes most of the time.
Our exterior packages include 1 to 3 stage paint correction, depending on whether the car is new or second-hand. Even new cars can arrive with marks from transport and dealer washing. A typical preparation sequence looks like this:
- A thorough hand wash to remove loose dirt
- Chemical decontamination to dissolve iron particles bonded to the paint
- Clay treatment to lift remaining contamination and leave the surface smooth
- Paint correction to remove swirls and marks, matched to the condition of the paint
- A panel wipe so the coating bonds to bare, clean clear coat
- Application of the coating, followed by curing
Aftercare in a hot, humid climate
A coating makes care easier, but it still needs the right care. We explain how long to wait before the first wash when we hand the car back. After that, these habits keep it performing:
- Wash in the shade or in the cool of early morning so soap does not dry on hot panels
- Use a pH-neutral shampoo, such as the aftercare products supplied with your coating
- Use two buckets and a clean wash mitt to avoid dragging grit across the paint
- Remove droppings and sap as soon as you notice them
- Dry with a soft, clean microfibre towel instead of letting the car air dry
- Skip automatic brush washes, which can leave fine scratches in any finish
How the coating performs over its 5 year protection depends a lot on this routine. A coating that is washed gently and kept free of baked-on contamination keeps its gloss and water behaviour far better than one that is neglected or scrubbed harshly.
What a coating will not do
It is better to know the limits up front. A ceramic coating resists light marring and makes the paint easier to keep clean, but it does not make a car scratch proof. Stone chips, car park dings and hail damage are beyond what any coating can stop.
It also does not mean the car never needs washing. Coated cars still get dirty, they just clean up faster. If heat inside the car bothers you as much as the paint does, pairing a coating with quality window tint protects the cabin as well.
